Music at St. Stephen’s
Our Choir
Music is a large part of our worship at St. Stephen’s. During the 10:30 am Mass on Sundays our superb, largely volunteer choir, conducted by choir director Gregory Cheng, sings a fine repertoire of Anglican anthems, psalms, and motets.
The Choir always welcomes new members. If you would like to join, please email Gregory Cheng at cheng.gregory@gmail.com or come to a rehearsal.
Our Music Director
Gregory Cheng comes to us from Grace Cathedral in San Francisco where he sang as a baritone and countertenor with the Cathedral”s Choir of Men and Boys and served as a frequent guest conductor.
His musical career includes tenure as an Assistant Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, a baritone with the San Francisco Opera Chorus and conductor of wind ensembles, orchestras and choruses throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. His teachers include Albert J. McNeil, Vance George, David Conte, Alasdair Neale and Helmut Rilling and he holds a B.A. and M.A. in Music (conducting) from the University of California, Davis.
By day, Greg serves as a financial services executive based in Miami. He lives in Coconut Grove with his wife and daughter.
The Organ
In addition to the good fortune of having our excellent choir director, we are blessed with a three manual Schantz organ. That means our organ has three keyboards. In addition to the usual two, a third, or “Choir” manual is added on at the bottom. It plays a variety of delicate stops that are most suitable for accompaniment.
St. Stephen’s sponsors free music events throughout the year for the community at large. Among these, our Coconut Grove Music Series, organized by our Music Director Gregory Cheng, brings together local musicians to perform on selected Friday evenings in the church sanctuary free of charge. This is the Coconut Grove Music Series.
Our coming events are:
Apr. 05 | The Stamps Brass Quintet Five outstanding young brass musicians (two trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba) from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music
May 10 | Music for Organ and Strings
John Fenstermaker, organ, performing Handel Organ Concerti and Mozart Church Sonatas
